Anibal Sanchez doesn't have to go home, but he can't stay here.
According to Phil Miller, Sanchez, who was scheduled to make his first start of spring training on Sunday, will be waived to make room for Lance Lynn.
The Twins signed Lynn to a reported one-year, $12 million deal on Saturday – a move that gives them one of the deepest starting rotations in the American League.
Sanchez was competing with Phil Hughes and Adalberto Mejia for the fifth and final spot in the rotation, but now it appears that none of them have a chance to be rotation mainstays.
Hughes or Mejia could however be in the rotation to start the season until Ervin Santana returns from his finger injury in May.
Minnesota's projected five starters once Santana returns:
- Lance Lynn (11-8, 3.43 ERA)
- Jake Odorizzi (10-8, 4.14 ERA)
- Jose Berrios (14-8, 3.89 ERA)
- Ervin Santana (16-8, 3.28 ERA)
- Kyle Gibson (12-10, 5.07 ERA)
The season opener is March 29 at Baltimore.
