John DeFilippo and Johnny Manziel

Before anyone starts throwing tomatoes at me, just know that this isn't an article begging the Vikings to find a way to sign Johnny Manziel. It is an article explaining DeFilippo's history with Johnny Manziel.

Why are we talking about Manziel?

Because he was on Good Morning America on Monday saying he's sober and focused on his mental health with an end goal of returning to the NFL.

And because the Vikings don't have any quarterbacks signed for 2018 and DeFilippo was the offensive coordinator in Cleveland during Manziel's 2015 season.

The odds of Mike Zimmer, who was aware of Manziel's red flags before the 2014 draft, and DeFilippo, who got a front row view of Manziel's problems in Cleveland, going after Manziel seem far fetched, but we've seen crazier things in the NFL.

On Manziel's lifestyle:

"You watch the Peyton Mannings and the Drew Brees and the Aaron Rodgers, those guys are obsessed with football," DeFilippo said when talking about Manziel's lifestyle, according to Sporting News. "And you talk about quarterback lifestyle, in our very first meeting that’s what we’re going to talk about with those guys."

Will Manziel be a successful starting QB?

"I can't predict the future, but all I can do is tell you right now Johnny Manziel is putting himself in a position to be a quarterback in the NFL," he said May 9, 2015 via

Manziel was starting to "get it":

"I think he's a new guy," DeFilippo told the Akron Journal in August of 2015. "I think from a preparation standpoint and a want-to standpoint haven't changed since OTAs, but I think you see a different quarterback. I really do. I think his overall understanding of the game and what we're trying to do has changed drastically. I really think that. He understands protections. He's making the calls. He understands his sight adjust. He understands his hots."

On Manziel's natural ability:

"Johnny has tremendous physical attributes – tremendous physical attributes," DeFilippo said Sept. 24, 2015 via "We just have to keep grooming him and keep teaching him situational football and when to take chances and when not to."

The Vikings don't just need a starting quarterback, they need multiple quarterbacks to fill out next season's roster.

Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford are all unsigned, so Manziel is a name to at least pay attention to considering his connection to DeFilippo.

Just kidding lol. We hope...
