It wasn't as bonkers as Wednesday night's hockey finals, but Thursday night did provide the drama in a trio of games.
A shortie for State
The most surreal finish happened as the Orono Spartans beat the Breck Mustangs 2-1 in overtime to clinch a spot in next week's State Tournament.
Just over five minutes into the extra period, Orono's Thomas Walker scored SHORT-HANDED for the game-winner.
Sadly, there isn't any video of the game-winner, but the photo at the top of the story shows the moment, at least.
Give Breck a ton of credit for even forcing overtime. They had to kill off 35 seconds of a 5-on-3 Orono power play late in the third period, and then another 1:25 of 5-on-4.
Double OT to dethrone Cathedral
Nobody, and I mean nobody thought St. Cloud Cathedral was going to lose to Alexandria, but it happened Thursday night. Jack Westlund scored the winning power-play goal less than two minutes into the second overtime for a 3-2 win.
Cathedral had scored 24 goals in its previous two section playoff games and also crushed Alexandria 7-1 on Dec. 12.
“We’re the underdogs,” Alexandria goalie Jackson Boline told the Echo Press. “Nobody thought that we would do this. They thought it would be the same game as the first time we played them. Cathedral has always been the top dog, and this year we are.”
Crowd erupts in Duluth
It took overtime, but Duluth East got out of Amsoil Arena with a 3-2 win over Andover. Listen to the crowd erupt on the game-winning goal by sophomore Logan Anderson.
Considering Duluth East hammered Andover 9-3 during the regular season, this one was a lot closer than many expected, and that's largely due to Andover's goalie finishing with 50 saves.
