If the last few weeks are any indication, soundtracks are back in 2018. The Roots' are the first out of the gate, with blistering a new Bilal-assisted performance of "It Ain't Fair" from the Detroit soundtrack.
The Philly connection is strong between the two hip-hop heavyweights, as the lush backing from The Roots makes Bilal's hypnotizing voice and Black Thought's rapid-fire raps just as cinematic and the film itself.
We've all become accustomed to The Roots killing it each and every night on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, so for them to make the journey one hour down and one floor up to the Late Night with Seth Meyers stage is a significant step. Fortunately, the performance absolutely delivers, giving us a reminder of why The Roots have become such a longstanding cornerstone of hip-hop for over 25 years.
Of course, the reason "It Ain't Fair" is having a resurgence now, six months after its release, is due to being shortlisted for an Academy Award nomination for a Best Song Oscar. With the official nominees being revealed January 23, hopefully this stellar performance give the track one last strong final push into Oscar contention.
