Last night's BET Hip-Hop Awards made headlines for Eminem's breathtaking - and spit-taking- four minutes of fury against President Donald Trump. But, somewhere along the way, an award show happened as well, and it was a sight to behold for hip-hop's top hustlers in 2017.
Cardi B's performance of her breakthrough #1 hit "Bodak Yellow" was especially poignant. Beginning with clips of her pre-music life, Cardi came out in a vision of pure elegance as she performed in front of a recreation of a New York corner. The tremendous clip can be seen here. Cardi B also took home four awards including Rookie of the Year, Mixtape of the Year, Hustler of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Style.
Migos also lit up the night with their best televised performance yet: a boisterous run through "Too Hotty." The kinetic dancing and glowing paint in front of a deep jungle setting exemplified how the trio are bringing the culture into new visual realms.
Kendrick Lamar also had a big night, winning both Lyricist of the Year and Album of the Year for Damn, as well as video of the year for "HUMBLE." DJ Khaled took home both MVP of the year and Best collaboration for he and Rihanna's "Wild Thoughts." Metro Boomin won producer of the year. Finally, Luther Campbell was the recipient of the annual I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award.
