Fortune has released its annual 100 Best Places to Work list and only one Minnesota company made the list.

The rankings are compiled based on feedback from employees of the country's biggest employers.

And while Minnesota is home to 19 Fortune 500 company's, the only one to make this year's Top 100 was Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, which is based in Golden Valley.

The financial services company ranked 40th on this year's list, the highest it's ever achieved in the seven consecutive years it's made the list, and a marked improvement on the 100th it finished last year.

Last year there were two Minnesota companies on the list, Allianz and the Mayo Clinic, the latter of which has slipped out of the top 100.

However, there are several companies that aren't based here but employ large numbers of workers in Minnesota that did make the Top 100.

These include SAS (Bloomington) St. Jude's Research Hospitals (St. Louis Park), Kimley Horn (St. Paul), AT&T (Minneapolis), Delta, and retailers like REI and Build-a-Bear Workshop.

What makes Allianz so good to work for?

Allianz employees are particularly complimentary about their employer's efforts to contribute to the wider community.

Its facilities meanwhile "contribute to a good working environment," and they believe their management engages in honest and ethical business practices.

Some 94 percent of 1,086 employees surveyed said they're proud to tell others they work at Allianz.

"We are honored to again receive this recognition from Fortune," said Allianz Life President and CEO Walter White said in a press release.

"At Allianz Life, we strive to create a culture where every employee is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. We know that our success as a company depends on the success of our employees."
