A woman shot dead in St. Paul on Friday evening was pregnant, police say.

St. Paul Police Department issued an update to the fatal shooting, confirming that the victim was 18-year-old Eileen Viveros-Vargas of Landfall, Minnesota.

A 19-year-old man was arrested and is in custody in relation to the attack at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, with Viveros-Vargas pronounced dead at the scene after being found in the bedroom of a property on the 1900 block of Cottage Avenue East.

"Viveros-Vargas was pregnant at the time of her death and her unborn child did not survive," the department said in a statement.

It's not been revealed how far along she was in her pregnancy.

The Pioneer Press reports that the arrested suspect was in a relationship with Viveros-Vargas and living with her at the time, with police also finding several bags and jars of marijuana and a handgun at the scene.

He has been charged with drug possession and remains under investigation for homicide, the newspaper notes.
