How would you spend five days in the Mall of America?

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Mall of America is offering quite the opportunity to a talented writer.

The MOA announced it is launching a competition to find a "Writer-in-Residence," who will write about their "on-the-fly" impressions as they spend five days in the Bloomington mall.

In return, the mall will fly (or drive) them to the Twin Cities, put them up for four nights in one of the hotels attached to the mall (so, presumably the Marriott or the Radisson) as well as give them $400 in vouchers to spend on food and drink during their time at the mall.

For those of you who think spending five days in a mall sounds like your own version of hell, bear in mind the writer will also get a $2,500 "honorarium" payment for services rendered.

So what to write about? Perhaps spending a morning with the mall walkers? Trying every ride at Nickelodeon Universe? Day-drinking margaritas at Jimmy Buffett's? Hanging out with the exotic fish at the Sea Life Aquarium?

The Mall of America wants applicants to make a pitch for what they plan to write about – and they have a maximum of 150 words to convince mall judges.

"Would it be a personal story? A blow-by-blow account of your experiences? The Mall as seen through the eyes of a first-time tourist or a regular guest?" the mall says.

The competition is open to everyone from "all writing backgrounds and levels of experience, from seasoned journalists to aspiring poets," provided they're aged 18 and over and are legal residents of the U.S.

The deadline for applications is March 10, after which 25 semifinalists will be selected and asked to submit 500-800 word essays to support their application. A winner will be chosen by a panel of experienced writers and journalists.
