A state representative is shaken but not stirred after being the victim of an armed robbery in St. Paul Thursday night.
Rep. Dennis Smith was walking northbound on Milton Street, just north of Grand Ave., while on his phone at around 10:30 p.m., a police report says. He was approached by a man who pulled a gun on him.
“Gimme your wallet and phone,” he said to Smith, a St. Paul police spokesman told GoMN.
Smith handed over his wallet and phone, at which point the robber ran off, leaving Smith to head to the nearby Salut Bar to call the police. A K-9 search for the suspect was unsuccessful, police said.
Smith, a Republican, was first elected to represent Maple Grove in 2014 and is serving in his second term.
When asked about the incident on Friday, the lawmaker was pretty cool about the whole thing.
“I think he was in a hurry and I was willing to abide by that, as long as I was able to walk away safely,” he told the Pioneer Press. He also told the newspaper that being in the Legislature “trains you to be calm and relaxed.”
Police are asking for the public’s help locating the suspect. He was described as black, 25 to 35 years old, clean shaven and with short hair. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt at the time of the robbery.
Anyone who might have seen something or knows anything is asked to call St. Paul Police at 651-266-5650.
