Sen. Franken talks politics and 1984 with actress Olivia Wilde

Late last month, Sen. Al Franken and actress Olivia Wilde sat down with the New York Times to talk light politics. On Saturday, the Times published their interview.

Together, the Minnesota Democrat and Wilde – who is starring in a Broadway adaptation or George Orwell’s classic, 1984 – made ties between today’s politics and the dystopian novel.

“It’s adorable to think I made a living by pointing out that people were lying,” Franken said. “And people seemed to care about it back then. Now we have a president who calls the news media the enemy of America.”

“It’s straight out of 1984,” the actress responded.

They also touched on some lighter, sillier topics – like when Franken first met Wilde as an apathetic teenager.
