Who would pay this much for Mulan-inspired McDonald’s sauce from 1998?

Back in 1998, you were probably listening to the Titanic soundtrack, playing Ocarina of Time, and adding some McDonald’s Mulan-themed Szechuan sauce to your fast food burgers.

Most of those are still pretty readily available. That Szechuan sauce is not. Which is why somebody ponied up thousands of dollars to get an unopened packet of the stuff on Ebay.

That’s right, eBay seller mavericmedi_0 listed a brand new, unopened packet of the 20-year-old sauce – and it sold for $14,700.

“I just bought a really old car, while cleaning it I found a packet of this sauce,” the seller wrote.

And it was good timing. As the seller explains, it recently was mentioned in a new episode of Rick and Morty, and McDonald’s even dropped a show reference on Twitter.

“After watching the recent episode of Rick and Morty I went online to see if it was worth anything. Turns out it was,” the seller wrote, adding. “Also this comes with a packet of wasabi as well.”

So who bought it?

Well eBay doesn’t show the exact user’s name. But there were 187 bids on the packet, which started at $10. And the winning buyer placed 21 bids – it’s their only eBay action in the past 30 days.

Beyond that, we don’t know much. Though the seller had this to say:

“I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20 year old gnarly sauce gets this.. I would prefer not to sell it to a collector.”

Disney by the way is reportedly prepping a live-action Mulan remake, and the McDonald’s CEO told USA Today they “never say never” when it comes to possibly bringing Szechuan sauce back.

This person however argues that would be a mistake. In a column for Inverse, Yasmin Tayag argues the original animated film was an “oversimplified” take on Chinese culture, and that the sauce “has nothing to do with the roots of the legend [the movie] purports to celebrate.”
