Back in 1998, you were probably listening to the Titanic soundtrack, playing Ocarina of Time, and adding some McDonald’s Mulan-themed Szechuan sauce to your fast food burgers.
Most of those are still pretty readily available. That Szechuan sauce is not. Which is why somebody ponied up thousands of dollars to get an unopened packet of the stuff on Ebay.
That’s right, eBay seller mavericmedi_0 listed a brand new, unopened packet of the 20-year-old sauce – and it sold for $14,700.
“I just bought a really old car, while cleaning it I found a packet of this sauce,” the seller wrote.
“After watching the recent episode of Rick and Morty I went online to see if it was worth anything. Turns out it was,” the seller wrote, adding. “Also this comes with a packet of wasabi as well.”
So who bought it?
Beyond that, we don’t know much. Though the seller had this to say:
“I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20 year old gnarly sauce gets this.. I would prefer not to sell it to a collector.”
This person however argues that would be a mistake. In a column for Inverse, Yasmin Tayag argues the original animated film was an “oversimplified” take on Chinese culture, and that the sauce “has nothing to do with the roots of the legend [the movie] purports to celebrate.”
