First Avenue is hosting a dance party weekend for the 1-year anniversary of Prince’s death

It’s been almost a year since the tragic death of Minnesota icon Prince, and the venue where he made his name is planning a big weekend to commemorate him.

First Avenue has announced a series of dance parties that will be held over the weekend April 21-23.

It will kick off on Friday, April 21, a year to the day that Prince passed away at his Paisley Park studios, with a late night dance party featuring DJ Espada, Lenka Pris, DJ Jake Rudh and DJ Smitty, the doors for which open at 9 p.m. and $10 tickets will be available here from Wednesday.

On the Saturday, 7th Street will be blocked off for a Memorial Street Party, which will be held between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and will feature performances by artists “touched by Prince’s gifts.”

Tickets for this free event will be available to those who RSVP on First Ave’s website from 10 a.m. Wednesday.

And as the street party is ending, First Avenue will open its doors again at 9 p.m. for its second consecutive dance party, this one featuring DJ Keezy, DJ Verb X, Shannon Blowtorch and Cloud.

The weekend will end with a party for younger revelers on Sunday, with First Avenue holding an “I Would Dance 4 U” kids dance party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which is open to all ages and costs $5 for adults, and it’s free for kids.

It’ll be a huge weekend for Prince celebrations in the Twin Cities, with Paisley Park hosting the four-day Celebration 2017 festival on the studio grounds.

It will feature musical performances from, among others, the Revolution and Morris Day and the Time, as well as panel discussions, historical presentations, and more to celebrate the life and passing of the Minnesota musical icon.
