A high-end pizza restaurant with a hidden bar has been one of the places to be seen in Minneapolis since it opened in November, and now it’s getting national attention.
Young Joni, the latest concept by Pizzeria Lola and Hello Pizza creators Ann Kim and Conrad Leifur, features on GQ’s 10 Best New Restaurants 2017 list.
Food critic Brett Martin says the name of the northeast Minneapolis restaurant alone “beguiles” him, and notes that Kim’s “extraordinary pizzas” at Lola and Hello Pizza are now complemented by a selection of small plates cooked on open wood-fire grills.
“Grilled mushrooms bathed in chestnut-miso butter; huge head-on prawns, painted the color of freshly fired brick with red-chile fish sauce,” he writes. “The pizzas are blistered and bubbly and perfect.”
It’s not just pizzas and small plates the restaurant is known for. Among its desserts is the traditional Minnesotan “Church Basement” cookies and bars, which come with a small bottle of milk.
And an added twist to the usual restaurant-going experience comes in the form of a secret back bar, accessed via a separate entrance in an alley shared by the adjacent Dangerous Man Brewing Company.
The hidden bar was named “Best New Bar” in CityPages’ Best of 2017 list this week, while Young Joni took the award of “Best New Restaurant.”
