2 Minnesota mushers have finished the Iditarod sled dog race

Two of the three Minnesota men who set out on the Iditarod – the massive 1,000 mile dogsled race from Anchorage to Nome – have arrived at the finish line.

Nathan Schroeder

Nathan Schroeder of Warba finished Thursday after spending 9 days, 21 hours and 8 minutes out in the frozen tundra with a team of dogs.

Schroeder came in at 35th place, and he said afterwards that he was happy to finish in less than 10 days.

“We had a good race. We had a stomach bug but once we started feeling better, everything went well,” the 39-year-old said. “These dogs are tough as nails.”

Schroeder first competed in the Iditarod in 2014. That year he won the rookie of the year award. Now a seasoned veteran, he says he “just can’t get enough.”

Gunnar Johnson

One day later, another Minnesota man finished the race.

Gunnar Johnson, a Duluth city attorney, arrived Friday. He spent 10 days, 22 hours and 4 minutes on the trails, coming in at 48th place.

The 49-year-old calls himself, “sort of an accidental musher” in this race. He only agreed to race as a fill in for another musher.

Johnson hadn’t raced in the Iditarod since 1991, but he performed a lot better than he did 26 years ago. In 1991, the race took Johnson more than 22 days.

Other racers with MN ties

There was one other musher from Minnesota competing in the race.

Ryan Anderson – an Iditarod rookie from the city of Ray – only made it five days on the trail before he had to stop.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, he had to drop out of the race last weekend because his dogs got sick.

Twin sisters also competed in the race. Kristy and Anna Berington both live in Alaska now, but the News Tribune says they’re originally from western Wisconsin and used to compete in Minnesota’s John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

They both finished the race on Thursday in 40th and 41st places, respectively.

The Iditarod kicked off March 4 with a ceremonial start. Racing began March 6. You can keep up with the latest Iditarod news here.
